These transactions are filtered to remove outliers (negative transaction amounts or transaction amounts greater than one billion, and transactions where where literage was reported as negative or in excess of 200 litres). Transactions for tags that are not registered to a household are also not included in the calculation. The total number of litres is a sum of values calculated by assets based on measured flow rate and flow time.

The number of unique tags that performed a transaction in this time is counted and multiplied by the average number of households registered to a tag, and them multiplied by the average household size. The average household size is obtained from the latest UN Database on Household Size and Composition

The total number of dispensers that are perceived to be currently in use for the relevant water systems, organisations and countries. In order to be included in the number, an asset must be marked as "online" and be in a water system that is commissioned and not defunct. The asset must also be in a country for which reporting is enabled. Please note that assets that are experiencing faults and connectivity problems are included.

Of the dispensers in service, this is the percentage not experiencing downtime. Downtime does not include connectivity or communication problems, but relates to faults with the asset and its hardware. The specific faults that apply to this number are as follows: Power failure, low battery, valve fault, valve jam.
